44 Castellana

New facade as part of the refurbishment of the Insurance Compensation Fund of the Ministry of Economy and Finance building located at Paseo de la Castellana 44 in Madrid.

This is an hexagonal plan building, with nine office floors, ground floor and roof, totalling 36 m in height.

The new façade concept by by Estudio Alvarez-Sala is based on a double skin.

The inner skin comprises a stick curtain wall with high-performance glazing units on the vision areas and opaque aluminium panels on the spandrel areas.

The outer skin, which is fixed to the inner curtain wall façade but supported by stainless steel cables hanging all the way from the roof, has been specifically designed by Strunor for the project. All elements are made of extruded aluminium; brackets, cantilevering beams, catwalk sections and also the supporting pieces for the external glazing.

The large pieces of glass overlap one another mimmicking scales on East and West elevations, while other smaller pieces are arranged perpendicularly to the façade on the North and South elevations.
